A group of children and teens from Sucker River have returned from a weeklong trip in Alberta.

The group, consisting of six youth, recreation worker Brent Berscheid and teacher Megan Roberts, left the community July 8 and returned July 12.

They spent time in Calgary at the Calgary Stampede and Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. They also got to participate in activities such as swimming, attending an amusement park and eating at new restaurants.

The group also spent a day exploring Banff and taking a ride on the local gondola up a mountain.

“A lot of the kids never seen past Prince Albert, so for us, it was a good opportunity to give them some experiences and to reward them for doing well in school,” Lac La Ronge Indian Band Coun. Devin Bernatchez said.

“We know the kids really enjoy the experiences of travelling and, for us too, part of it is showing the kids there is more to life than just up here, and to go travel. We’d like kids to travel and experience something like the Calgary Stampede. They went to the rodeo and got to watch relay races. The Calgary Stampede is one of the greatest outdoor shows on the Earth.”

The six youth were either recent Sucker River graduates from La Ronge’s Senator Myles Venne School or were students leaving elementary school and going into high school.

The youth were between the ages of 12 and 18. This was the third time local leadership have organized such a trip to reward students.

For the remainder of the summer, Berscheid will be busy delivering programming to the children and teens in Sucker River.
