It should be an exciting weekend for baseball in the Battlefords.

Some of the best 18U baseball teams in the province are in North Battleford for the Tier 1 Provincial Championships.

The tournament got underway on Friday with eight teams from the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League (SPBL) AA set to compete, including the North Battleford Beavers, Estevan Brewers, Weyburn Angels, Assiniboia Aces, Regina White Sox, Prince Albert Royals, White Butte Broncos, and Regina Blue Jays.

Estevan enters the tournament as the number one seeded team after they won the SPBL AA regular season with a 24-4 record. Finishing in a close second though are the hosts North Battleford, who wrapped up the season at 23-5, while in third was Weyburn at 21-7.

The Championships began at 11 a.m. with Prince Albert taking on Weyburn, followed by the Blue Jays versus Estevan, the White Sox battling Assiniboia, and it wraps up with North Battleford hosting White Butte.

All games will be played at the Blue Jay Ball Diamond and Ken Nelsen Field. The tournament’s opening ceremonies are set for 5:30 p.m. at Ken Nelsen and a champion will be crowned on Sunday.
