Cooler, windy weather arrives in Saskatchewan

Jul 26, 2024 | 3:21 PM

We’re experiencing a bit of a reprieve from the hot, humid conditions experienced for most of July.

High temperatures are expected to stay in the low to mid-20’s through the weekend, which is below or near the average daytime high of 25 C.

Andy Yun of Environment and Climate Change Canada told northeastNOW for more than half of the month, the region has been above the normal high for this time of year.

“You’ve definitely had a few days where you’re warmer than that and only a few days where you were cooler,” explained Yun.

Yun said the added humidity of those warm days tended to boost the overnight low temperatures, and limited how far they could drop.

“It can get pretty repressive when you get temperatures almost reaching 30 C in the daytime and temperatures barely dropping in the low 20’s at night,” said Yun. Overnight lows are normally in the low to mid-teens.

Warmer air has a tendency to carry more water vapour, which builds up the humidex during the day and in the evenings as well. Yun said high humidex values and hot temperatures can be difficult for people to cope with.

We should get a break from the hot weather for a while, according to Yun. Temperatures in the low 20’s should last into next week, with highs in the mid to high 20’s only returning late next week according to Environment and Climate Change Canada’s latest forecast.

However, it’s not all smiles, as strong wind will be around for the next couple of days. Wind gusts up to 70 km/h are expected today, dying down later tonight. However, gusts could reach 50 or 60 km/h tomorrow as well, with cloudy conditions and showers also possible on Saturday.
