Highway 5 construction project hits halfway mark

A major infrastructure project in the St. Denis area is now 50 per cent complete.

The provincial government has announced that the extensive $40 million Highway 5 project has hit the midway point.

The government said in a news release the project is part of planned safety and traffic improvements in the Humboldt to Saskatoon corridor.

“Our government is committed to improving traffic safety and enhancing our transportation network in one of Saskatchewan’s fastest growing regions,“ Highways Minister Lori Carr said in the release. “I look forward to the completion of this project as we continue growing our strong and vibrant communities across the province.”

The project, which began in June of last year, includes shoulder widening, resurfacing, and a set of passing lanes on an approximately 15 km segment of Highway 5 in the St. Denis area.

The construction also includes the realignment of two roads that connect to Highway 5, including Range Road 314 to the south and the St. Denis access to the north. That work was done to safely allow drivers to turn on and off Highway 5, and to improve sight lines.

The remaining work includes twinning, resurfacing and other work on a 10 km stretch of Highway 5 between Saskatoon, and just east of the Highway 316 junction. Construction could start early next year, with the entire project expected to wrap up next summer.

In 2018, two sets of passing lanes were completed between Humboldt and Highway 2. The resurfacing, sightline improvements and shoulder widening work on Highway 5 between the junctions of 316 and 671 were completed in 2021, while a 15 km section of Highway 5 just west of Highway 2 was finished in 2023, including one set of passing lanes.
