A fun day for the young, and the young-at-heart.

Prairie North Co-op and the Melfort Trade Alliance Chamber of Commerce presented Touch-a-Truck at the Melfort Mall parking lot Friday, Aug. 9.

Prairie North food manager Justin Chaskavich told northeastNOW the annual event gives kids a chance to see large machinery up close, perhaps for the first time.

“I think it’s good that the kids can come and learn for the day about some of the equipment, the heavy ag equipment, the fire trucks, the police vehicles,” Chaskavich explained. “The kids don’t get exposed to that, so they’re trying to make the kids less scared if they see these vehicles in the street.”

Fire crews, RCMP officers, EMS personnel and other vehicle owners are on hand to teach kids about the various equipment and give them a chance to sit in the front seat. Many children took advantage, activating trucker air horns, sirens, and more.

Touch-a-Truck was also free of charge for everyone, and Chaskavich said having a free, fun, safety learning event for children is important.

In addition to the large vehicles, the event featured a climbing wall, petting zoo, bouncy houses, balloon animals, and face painting. The girl guides also hosted the barbecue as they looked to raise money for their trip to Europe.

Chaskavich said they usually have about 300-500 people come through the event each year.

“We’re always looking to expand each year and get more businesses and opportunities involved,” said Chaskavich. “The more safety, the better for the kids.”
