The city of Humboldt will play host to a major event for firefighters this weekend.

The Canadian FireFit championships will be held in the Humboldt Uniplex parking lot on Saturday and Sunday.

Humboldt’s Director of Protective Services Mike Kwasnica told northeastNOW the city has never hosted the event before.

“The FireFit competition is an event where people come from all over Canada actually, and I think from some of the northern United States,” Kwasnica said. “They compete in different firefighting competitions.”

Humboldt is hosting the Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Northwest Territories event. Kwasnica said they’re eager to welcome firefighters to the city.

“We do have some… world-renowned competitors that are going to be coming into Humboldt here to compete this weekend so we’re extremely excited and hopefully we can pull it off and everybody has a good time.”

The event has been held in Regina over the past few years, and FireFit reached out to Humboldt to see if they wanted to host this year.

The parking lot on the east side of the Uniplex will be used for the event, with the four-story tower set up, along with event tents and bleachers for the public to watch.

Kwasnica encourages anyone in Humboldt for the weekend to come to FireFit. Streetfest is also taking place in the city this weekend, and Kwasnica welcomes people to take in both activities and cheer on the firefighters at the Uniplex.

“I know it’s going to be exciting for our fire department to host (the event) as well.”

The Humboldt Fire Department is hosting FireFit with the Saskatchewan Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team. Kwasnica said the CISM team helps fire departments and different organizations deal with traumatic events.
