New power engineering programs in Saskatchewan

The Government of Saskatchewan has announced the Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre (Sask DLC) has partnered with SaskPower to offer online fourth and fifth-class Power Engineering courses to high school students and adults.

According to a release, Saskatchewan high schools have offered these programs since 2014, and Sask DLC has been running them since 2023, while the Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan (TSASK) accredits them.

A media release said 327 Saskatchewan students have completed the fourth class, and 141 have completed the fifth class of the power engineering program.

“Sask DLC is proud to partner with SaskPower to continue to offer these unique opportunities, and the fourth-class high school program is the only one of its kind in Canada,” Minister Responsible for Sask DLC Jeremy Cockrill said in a release.

As the release mentioned, students in Sask DLC’s fifth-class program complete two online courses within one school year, offering a basic understanding of power engineering, covering boiler operations and maintenance.

Each course includes a 50-hour work study to meet steam time requirements for certification.

After completing fifth-class certification, students can pursue fourth-class certification with two additional upgrade courses.

As per the release, the fourth-class program includes four online classes, each with 50 hours of theory and 50 hours of work-study. It provides hands-on experience and prepares students for industry exams, making it ideal for those looking to enter the power engineering field after high school.

Upon completion, students can fine job opportunity as fourth-class engineers.

“Power Engineers are vital for the operation of our provincial power grid, as well as other heavy industries that keep our province’s economy growing,” Minister Responsible for SaskPower Dustin Duncan said in a release.

The release pointed out that Sask DLC and SaskPower have signed a new agreement to coordinate and promote student steam lab time and offer scholarship opportunities. SaskPower will also provide hands-on experience at its portable steam lab.
