Camping season coming to end in Lac La Ronge Provincial Park

Sep 10, 2024 | 1:50 PM

The camping season in the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park is winding down.

Most campgrounds — Nut Point, Nemeiben Lake, Wadin Bay, Little Deer, MacKay Lake and Churchill River – have all closed following the Labour Day long weekend. The only campgrounds in the park remaining open until the end of the month are at Missinipe and Devil Lake.

“It really depends on the weather, just because of the water systems and freezing,” said Park Manager Natasha Merriman.

“That’s generally why we close the three main campgrounds earlier because we have to get water systems shutdown and winterized.”

Overall, Merriman explained the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park had higher occupancy this year than in 2023. She contributes that to the warm, dry weather this summer, the lack of any major fires in the region, and the thousands of people who came to La Ronge in August for the Tony Cote Summer Games.

Development of a new service centre at Nut Point has also begun. It will be located across from the existing service centre and will feature conventional, family, and accessible spaces. It’s expected to open to the public in summer 2025.

“Site preparation has been completed, septic tanks have been installed and the contractors are now working on the under-slab plumbing and forming the slab,” Merriman noted.

The Lac La Ronge Provincial Park is one of the largest in Saskatchewan. It features nearly 100 lakes and more than 30 documented canoe routes.

Every year, it draws in tourists from across Canada and beyond.
