The City of Melfort has their new Director of Public Works.

Kalyna Cipywnyk has taken over the job after former director Lydia Steffen was hired as the new Director of Corporate Services last month. Steffen replaced Marley Seymour, who left the job to return to Manitoba.

Cipywnyk told northeastNOW she’s excited to take on the new role. She said not only did the position represent a career advancement, it also allowed her to continue her increased passion for public works.

“Getting to see the day-to-day operations of the city and our crews, and it’s something I’m very interested in and aligns with my education and my background,” explained Cipywnyk.

Cipywnyk had previously been the Municipal Project Manager with the city, managing Melfort’s various capital projects. Through that job, Cipywnyk said she interacted daily with the public works department and co-ordinated between external contractors and city crews.

She’s looking forward to seeing her role in the public works field grow.

“I am looking forward to becoming more familiar with the city’s internal policies and establishing levels of service through our policies where we can set up realistic expectations about what we’re able to achieve as a department with the resources we have,” said Cipywnyk. “If there (are) more needs identified beyond that level of service, then being able to facilitate those discussions.”

As far as remaining capital projects, Cipywnyk said the city has largely wrapped up their pavement patching for the year. Crews have also been finishing painting and other summer maintenance and getting ready for winter.

She said the city is an ideal place for career development and Melfort is a great place to live, work, and play.
