2024 Melfort Multi-k in the ‘sweet spot’

Sep 15, 2024 | 12:57 PM

The 13th annual Melfort Multi-k was held earlier on Saturday and roughly 500 people came out to run through the streets of the northeast community.

Held in September every year, the Multi-k sets up five and 10-kilometre runs for both men and women, as well as a half marathon.

Also in the mix is a sponsored and free one-kilometre run for kids, as everyone from extreme runners to those just looking to get a nice walk in can participate.

“We had 550 registered, selling out all four events, which was pretty amazing. The actual attendance was about 495, which for me is always the mark of success I measure by, is how many people actually come on the day. To have that kind of percentage is a really good turnout for me,” explained Race Director Allison Rogers.

“We’ve just sort of found a sweet spot with registrant numbers, and then with our sponsored kids run, which is always a lot of fun. It’s always been our goal to keep that run free and accessible for the kids because it really is the best part of the morning. Those kids are always pumped when they come back.”

The event had a fairly good day when it came to the weather as well, as the morning was a bit cool, which was perfect for those who worked up a sweat.

Rogers joked that they have seen snow before, so there definitely wasn’t anything to complain about.

She also added that the weather is really the only thing that isn’t constant in the race as most people seem to like the consistency of the event.

“I think it’s just one of those things where people like knowing what to expect and that they know where to go on the course. We don’t feel like we have to reinvent the wheel because we haven’t had negative feedback or people asking for something new.”

Those who may have particularly enjoyed the event were this years winners.

Mauricio Cantillano Castro and Jodi Souter won the five-kilometre run in the men’s and women’s divisions, while Nelson Peters and Dani Isberg won the 10-kilometre runs, and Curtis Glanville and Cyndi Jeffery won the half-marathon.

Rogers concluded by thanking all the sponsors and runners in the event while enjoying the fact that the race brings people together.

“There’s a couple of families that use it sort of as a big reunion, where they all come together this weekend. I think one of the grandma’s birthdays is around this time, so they come together. It’s also cool to see the kids grow because they all start at 1k, and now some of them are doing 5k. It’s pretty cool to see the families do it for fun,” she told northeastNOW.
