‘This is by far our best year’: JPII football looking good midway through the season

As the John Paul II Collegiate Crusaders football team just hit the mid-way point in the season, they currently hold a 2-1 record and Offensive Coordinator/Coach, Paul Fransoo said this is one of the best seasons they’ve had.

“Overall, when we look at the win-loss ratio, this is by far our best year…we have a good core group of twelves who have stepped up and filled the boots of the guys that were here last year that left. We have a group of elevens, tens and a handful of nines that are starting to get it because they’re watching it happen right in front of them. So by far this has been our most successful all around, creating the team, creating the coach’s group, putting wins on board.”

The team’s only loss so far was a 46-26 loss against Delisle in the first game of the season. Since then, they have beat Humboldt 38-33 and Kindersley 60-7. Fransoo attributed the success of the team to the leadership and hard work of the players, as well as the dedication of the coaching staff.

“You know the group of coaches that we have, I got to give them credit… we have more coaches this year who have either played the game or understand the game and they are consistently coming out and giving us a hand. We also got some great leaders. I watched the twelves teaching our nines. They’re having conversations right after the huddle…are we going left? Are we going right? Are we driving? Are we setting up and what are we doing? And they’re helping them, they’re helping them understand.”

Players on the team have also taken it amongst themselves to work with each other to better understand their roles and get better, Fransoo said.

“They’re all starting to work with each other. The kids will come grab the whiteboard and dry erase marker and they’ll draw on the board and talk to each other…Here’s where I was. This is where I saw you. What did you see? Why did you go there? How come I’m this way? Let’s look over here at this play. Let’s look over here at our defence… they are finally coming together as a team.”

Although getting the wins is great, Fransoo also talked about the importance of representing the school and how being a student-athlete and working hard translates to academics.

“We focus hard at the beginning of the season that you are a student athlete. The word student comes first but what we are going to teach you here is going to give you that resilience, to manage your classes, to get the work done, to break things down in small chunks…we also talked to them about once you are on this team, it is a privilege. It is not a right. You are a student athlete first. Every time you step on this field or off this field, after your name hits our roster, you are representing the entire body of individuals that’s playing, the entire body of coaches and every other person inside that building that bears the name.”

The Crusaders next game is this Friday, 4:30 p.m. against Delisle in Delisle and Fransoo said this will be a very important game for them.

“We’ve got this game in Delisle, which will be probably the most important game that we will have. They’re very difficult, strong fan base, strong support from the communities and numbers on their bench.”

The last home game for the Crusaders will be against Kindersley on Thursday, October 3, 4:30 p.m. at the Crusaders Field.
