TCT contributes more funding to Heritage Trail

The Trans Canada Trail (TCT) is contributing more funding to Air Ronge’s Heritage Trail.

During the organization’s most recent intake, the TCT awarded two grants to the village for various projects on the Heritage Trail. The first grant was through its Infrastructure and Signage stream for upgrading the trail where there were safety concerns.

Specifically, the funds will be used for adding wood chips to certain sections to enhance safety and user experience.

“The [second] component of the grant was minor maintenance for safety, so it was supported through our minor maintenance stream, which helps fund smaller projects,” explained Kristen Gabora, the director of trail development and volunteers for TCT.

“This portion of the funding for the Heritage Trail went towards the central maintenance work, which included the removal and replacement of a wood bridge and some rotten boards on a section of the boardwalk. Both were critical to keeping the trail safe and accessible.”

While larongeNOW was unable to confirm the exact amount of new funding awarded to the village by publishing, TCT doesn’t pay for the entirety of project costs. For instance, TCT will fund up to 35 per cent of the wood chips and up to 50 per cent towards the central maintenance work.

“The Heritage Trail is a key part of the Trans Canada Trail network by connecting people to nature and contributing to a broader goal of building a strong and sustainable trail system across Canada,” Gabora stated.

“That’s why we’re are so committed to funding important projects like the one in Air Ronge and to support the community in building a vibrant community. We want to build capacity and capability in the centre, along with increasing the overall quality of our network.”

The TCT connects 15,000 rural, urban and Indigenous communities across Canada and spans over 28,000 kilometres. Air Ronge’s Heritage Trail, which is 3.7 km, was accepted into the network in 2021.

The TCT has also previous awarded more than $32,000 for the Heritage Trail. That work included a study and funds for boardwalk repairs.

The TCT receives funding from federal, provincial and municipal governments and donors.
