Nominations still open for NESD board elections

Another opportunity to let your voice be heard.

School board elections are being held across the province Nov. 13.

North East School Division (NESD) Director of Education Stacy Lair told northeastNOW candidate nominations are being accepted until Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. Information on the NESD board elections can be found here, or by calling the division office. Nomination packages are also available.

She said the division is looking forward to seeing democracy in action.

“It’s very important for that local community voice,” said Lair. “School boards are an opportunity for that local voice to come together and, once on the board, to represent all our five thousand students in the North East School Division.”

According to Lair, anyone interested in becoming a board member can also visit the Saskatchewan School Boards Association website to learn more about what it means to be a board member, the role members play, and the time commitments that are necessary.

All board positions open after their four-year terms. In the North East School Division, there are eight subdivisions that require board members.

“(I’m) really interested to work as we head forward with all the board members who put their name forward on behalf of the students of Saskatchewan,” Lair said.

The election is also an opportunity for residents to have an informed vote on the candidates that are put forward. Lair said the candidates will probably be more than willing to talk about what is important for them on the board, which Lair said makes significant governance decisions and brings that local voice forward.

“I would say that our students are the most important people to look out after and leading that work is significant and important,” said Lair. “We want to choose candidates that are strong on public education views as well as inclusive education, and I hope that everyone can get out there and determine their best candidate and make that decision.”
