With no contenders who came forward to challenge her leadership, Julie Baschuk will serve a second term as mayor in Air Ronge.

The nomination period for candidates ended at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, resulting in the acclamations of Baschuk, as well as three other councillors.

She will be joined by long-time councillor Terry DesRoches, Tabitha Burr who will begin her second term, along with newcomer James Hope Howard.

With one spot yet to be claimed, that means a second nomination period for candidates will be need to be called.

Baschuk, who first joined council in 2012 and defeated Gordon Stomp for the mayoral position by five votes in the 2020, said she is sad to see Corey Hardcastle and Kristy McDougall leave the table, but is happy there will be some continuity with Burr and DesRoches remaining.

She also believes Howard will be an excellent addition to village council.

There was also low interest in a municipal election in La Ronge with all members of council winning their seats via acclamation. At a swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday evening, Mayor Joe Hordyski, as well as councillors Viviana Ruiz Arcand, Abby Besharah, Karli Carr, Terry Hunt, Melissa McNeil and Robert Pacey Sr., will all formally assume their positions.

The regular council meeting will be a short one with the agenda calling for the administration of the oath of office, the appointment of the deputy-mayor, various committee appointments and the finalization of signing authority.
