Independent Cumberland candidate releases ‘common sense’ platform

An Independent candidate running for MLA in Cumberland believes he can provide a “common sense” platform far more suitable for communities than the major political parties can provide.

“We should be judging our candidates on their level of passion and dedication for their community and what they’ll bring to the table during the course of the election, which is usually indicative of what they’ll bring after,” said Nasser Dean Chalifoux, who lives on an acreage 20 minutes south from Narrow Hills Provincial Park.

“If that should be the case, then my common sense platform stands above the rest, as it is tailored to the specific needs of Northern Saskatchewan.”

Chalifoux, who is of Métis descent, is a proponent of safer communities and one of his priorities is increasing staffing and RCMP resources in communities where they are needed most. That includes tightening laws around gun violence.

He also pledges to advocate for northern infrastructure requests, as well as raise supports for those on assistance and for families with children.

“Just like many others in Northeastern Saskatchewan, I and my family struggle daily to make ends meet, going hand to mouth, month to month,” Chalifoux said.

“I feel that having a representee that is in touch with the everyday realities we mostly all face is vital and spawns’ action in our collective fight for a more hopeful future.”

Chalifoux would also like to propose amendments and revisions to Saskatchewan’s Natural Resource Acts, repeal Sunday hunting, and propose a Rapid Wildfire Mitigation Plan and community evacuation strategy. In addition, he wants to establish environmental policies and regulations in the forestry and mining sectors to conserve and protect the environment.

Chalifoux also pledges to work on cutting the red tape for the production of hemp in Saskatchewan, as well as propose amendments to the Cannabis Act to allow for the commercial production of cannabis on First Nations reserves.

“The constituents of Cumberland should vote for me because I understand what this region really needs, unlike the so-called major party politicians that are out of touch with the people and their communities,” he said.

“We need a grassroots style of politics and representation in Northern Saskatchewan, similarly to what can be provided by an Independent like myself.”

The provincial general election is scheduled for Oct. 28. Other candidates running for MLA in Cumberland include the Saskatchewan Party’s Gregory Seib, the New Democratic Party’s Jordan McPhail, and the Green Party’s Siwichis Bird-Paddy.
