Oct 13, 2024 | 7:30 AM

It was a tough game for the Battleford North Stars Saturday night at the Elgar Petersen Arena as they lost 9-3 against the Humboldt Broncos.

The North Stars came out to a slow start with the Broncos getting four goals in the first period coming from Maddox Amaral, Boris Kofman, Kye Benoche and Josh Sale.

Despite having 19 shots on goal in the first, the North Stars couldn’t find the back of the net and trailed 4-0 going into the second.

For the second period, the Broncos opened up the scoring with a goal from Jacob Strizzi to take a 5-0 lead.

The North Stars finally got on the board in the second with a power play goal from Captain Jackson Allan to close the gap and make it 5-1.

But Humboldt continued to light the lamp and got another two goals, again coming from Jacob Strizzi and Boris Kofman to go up 7-1 and end the period.

In the third, it was a lot of the same as the Broncos opened up the scoring with a goal from Kye Benoche for his second of the game, to increase Humboldt’s lead to 8-1.

Battlefords did show some signs of life as they got two goals in the final period from Nikita Ivashchenko and Jordan Grill to close the deficit and make it 8-3.

The game finally came to an end with one last goal from the Broncos Gabriel Fillion to give Humboldt the 9-3 win.

The North Stars got out shot 40 to 39 by the Broncos, went 2/6 on the power play and stopped Humboldt two out of three times on the penalty kill.

Matthew MacArthur stopped 31 out of 40 shots in the contest.

Overall, Battlefords tied the two-game weekend series against Humboldt as they beat the Broncos 8-6 on Friday night.

The North Stars record now sits at 4-3-1-0 on the season.

Their next game is this Wednesday, Oct. 16, against the Notre Dame Hounds at the Duncan McNeil Arena in Wilcox.
