HUB conducts first ever homelessness count in tri-communities

The first ever Point in Time Count was held in the tri-communities this week.

The enumeration, which was conducted by Lac La Ronge Community Mobilization (HUB) and funded by Métis Nation – Saskatchewan, provides an estimate of homelessness in a community within a specified time period, generally 24 hours.

A Point in Time Count is not intended to be a comprehensive research study and it is not designed to provide the absolute number of individuals experiencing homelessness in a community. Instead, it offers a snapshot of homelessness, and when conducted consistently, allows communities to measure their progress in reducing homelessness.

“I think it was a pretty unique event,” said HUB coordinator Cherise Chrispen.

“I haven’t heard of an event like that in this area either. It was hugely successfully and I really want to do a big shout out to all of the volunteers and the organizations that participated, because we could have never done the work we did this week and the event itself without all of that support.”

Along with the count, HUB also held an event at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre on Thursday for anyone struggling with homelessness. It included addictions counselling, access to doctors, income support assistance, help with the Canada Revenue Agency, Service Canada, haircuts, art activities and games, free meals, immunizations, a winter survival gear giveaway and more.

While Chrispen explained the total number of people included in the count won’t be available until next week, she said 122 attended the event.
