Nigel Bell is coming back to Canada from the United States with another award win.

Bell, who is a Lac La Ronge Indian Band member who performs under the name Nige B, won Song Of The Year Hip-Hop at the Josie Music Awards in Nashville, Tennesse. The song he won the award for was Hold Your Heart Remix on the album U R What U R Volume 2.

“It just feels unreal because there were like 75,000 people who submitted and there was 126 winners and I ended up being one of the winners,” Bell said, noting the award show occurred over the past weekend.

“I was in another country where I have never been before, let alone think I am going to win, so I’m still kind of processing it and still high vibing from it. It’s just crazy.”

The Josie Music Awards is the largest music award show in the independent music industry. Its mission is to honour, recognize and reward excellence, outstanding talents, and remain focused on the creativity in independent music. Every submission is carefully reviewed for consideration by an all-pro-panel of judges.

Bell explained it was a large event with representation from more than two dozen countries. He said attending the show and being in Nashville was an inspiring experience.

“It was interesting because being in a country town where I am not that super country,” Bell said.

“It was interesting to see all the talent. You could walk into any kind of bar and there is a band playing in literally every bar. They are super talented and phenomenal. It’s interesting to see all these country people essentially trying to make it over there and become stars.”

Bell is fresh off the heels of a successful night at the Saskatchewan Indigenous Music Association Awards on Oct. 12. There he won Emerging Artist of the Year and Rap/Hip Hop/Electronic Artist of the Year.

He will next appear at the International Indigenous Hip Hop Awards at the end of November in Toronto. He’s nominated for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist.
