The Hawks were blanked 3-0 by the Melville Millionaires Tuesday at the Centennial Arena, now the club has a 10-day break before their next Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) game.

Nipawin goes into the much needed slow down struggling, the Hawks have two registered wins (one via Yorkton forfeiter), and a loss in overtime in their first 14 games. The club feels they have competed hard and haven’t given up in games, much the loss to Melville, their fifth consecutive defeat, but Captain Finley Radloff said the team simply needs to be better.

“We really did have a better game than we have been having so you can look at the positive there but at the same time we need to string some wins together, that’s all that matters,” the 19-year-old Nipawin product said after the game.

Four other SJHL teams have lost more games than they have won, there is still plenty of season to play (42 games left), so Radloff hopes the break can rejuvenate the group.

“I think this is a really great refresh for the guys, guys that are away from home to get ready for the next stretch before Christmas,” Radloff added.

Despite Nipawin’s record, recent events such as Greg Classen’s jersey retirement, the 40th anniversary banquet and over 400 season tickets being sold support for the club hasn’t wavered in the SJHL’s smallest market. Radloff is 14 games into the leadership role of his hometown team and had a message for the fans as the team exited for their break.

“We really do appreciate all the fans that come out every game despite how we are doing right now but we’re really looking to turn this around,” he said. “The support means everything to the team here. So, keep coming out to every game, it really means a lot to us.”

Newly acquired netminder Nathan Claydon made 33 saves in his Nipawin debut. The Hawks host Flin Flon on Nov. 9.
