Laing seeks fourth term on Battleford Council

When Town of Battleford Council Candidate, Doug Laing first ran for council 12 years ago, his goal was to give back to the community, and now, going for re-election a fourth time, his goal is still the same.

“I simply want to give back to the community, this has been home my entire life. This is where my wife and I have lived both of our entire lives. This is where we’ve raised our children and just an opportunity to give back was always on my radar, something that I always had a passion for, then and now.” Laing said.

Apart from just giving back to the community, Laing wants a Council that is able to provide amenities for the people. On top of that, he wants to continue to build connections and relationships between all communities in the area.

“I think our residents want a Council that is fiscally responsible, to be able to provide those amenities and those features of our community that we’re used to. I also want to continue to work with growing the relationships with our neighbors. The city, the First Nations and our neighboring RM’s. Everything done in the region affects all the people in one way or another, so those relationships are very important and that work needs to continue to grow.”

When asked about specific issues he wants to tackle first, Laing mentioned the upgrading of the District Care Centre along with improving regional discussions in regard to local arenas.

“The District Care Centre is a big topic that the provincial government has said is on a short list, so those discussions are going to start soon, and I’m sure there will be lots of them and that is very important for the entire region, but also for the town of Battleford, just some regional discussions about arenas. There’s been a lot of talk. Think about hockey skating arenas. What’s the proper fit? Where is the proper fit and how is that going to work? Those decisions and discussions are starting to heat up, so that’s very important for all the people and residents in this region.”

With the town municipal election just a few weeks away, Laing hopes to continue doing things for the people that benefit the people and looks forward to working with the new and returning councillors if re-elected.
