Six-year prison sentence handed down for violent robbery

A six-year prison sentence was handed down in La Ronge on Friday to a 21-year-old man for his role in a violent assault in Bell’s Point back in March.

Cameron Ratt pled guilty to aggravated assault after he and three others violently robbed a man, leaving him with two gunshot wounds in the back and the head. The assailants had lured the victim to a residence on the reserve and ambushed him.

Ratt will spend just over five years in jail for the crime with remand credit taken into account. He will be required to submit a DNA sample, and he was also given a 10-year firearms ban.

The victim, who can’t be identified due to a publication ban, wrote in his impact statement that he has lost the ability to work and care for his children. He noted he will forever have lifelong disabilities, and he is angered by the loss of his quality of life.

larongeNOW reached out to the victim in this case who declined to comment.

The prosecution called the crime dangerous, selfish, cruel and inhumane. After Judge Murray Pelletier handed down the sentence, he told Ratt – who has no previous criminal record – that he has caused great harm to the community. He also told Ratt to take advantage of correctional programs and that he has a chance to turn his life around.

When given the opportunity to address the court, Ratt declined to make a statement.

Back in May, Ratt’s brother Jaron Halkett pled guilty to aggravated assault and received a four-year prison sentence. Halkett showed remorse at sentencing and said he didn’t expect things to go the way they did.

He was also ordered to submit a DNA sample and was given a 10-year firearms ban.

Two others charged for their role in the violent robbery still have their matters before the court.
