Hawtin elected mayor in North Battleford; Battleford, Meadow Lake await results

The polls are closed and the results of the 2024 municipal elections are slowly coming to light.

In North Battleford, the results are historic after Kelli Hawtin was elected as the first woman to be mayor of the city. She said she looks forward to her new role in the community and is happy to be a part of history.

“It’s just kind of exciting to take it in tonight, exciting to get the result. I’m very proud to show my girls and other females that we have a place in shaping our communities,” she said.

She beat out Terence (Terry) Caldwell and Wayne Baptiste (Semaganis). Caldwell said he was disappointed in the loss, while Baptiste said the experience was an eye-opening one.

“[The city has] never had a First Nations person run for mayor before,” said Baptiste. “I’m glad that I did it because it really opens up the realities that are there that we do not take full advantage of each other’s gifts, our skills and our abilities, and we need to get to know each other to be able to work with each other.”

Two newcomers will sit on North Battleford city council. Dennis Mercer and Rodney Fedler were elected. Kent Lindgren, Greg Lightfoot, Bill Ironstand, and Ross MacAngus were re-elected.

All results are unofficial as of Nov. 13 and will become official Nov. 14.

For Battleford and Meadow Lake, their results will be posted tomorrow morning. Meadow Lake’s results will be revealed at 9 a.m. and Battleford’s election results will be made public at 11 a.m.
