Mustangs welcome rival Hawks to begin Parent/Billet weekend

The Melfort Mustangs and their players will welcome plenty of family members to town this weekend as they celebrate their annual Parent/Billet appreciation week.

Melfort will begin the festivities Friday night when they play host to their biggest rival in the league.

The Nipawin Hawks will be descending on the Northern Lights Palace tonight, for the first of four times this season.

The two clubs have only met once so far this year, back on Oct. 19 in Nipawin at the Cage.

The Mustangs won that game fairly handily, kicking off the eight scheduled meetings this season with a 6-2 victory.

Melfort is also coming off a 3-2 overtime win on Wednesday night, outlasting the Estevan Bruins on home ice.

“It doesn’t matter who we’re playing, this is a big four-point weekend we need to get, and we’d obviously love to have a good couple of games to show our parents, our friends and our family what the Mustangs are about,” said Stangs’ forward, Logan Belton.

Following Friday’s contest against the league-worst Hawks (2-12-1), the Blue and Green will play host to the Notre Dame Hounds on Saturday.

The three home games in a four-day stretch for the Mustangs are against the bottom three teams in the SJHL standings, as they hope to regain the top spot in the league.

During both contests this weekend, a third jersey auction will be held during the intermissions.

On Friday, the jerseys of Logan Keup, Cole Unger, Kaleb Binner, Austin Shepherd, Danton Cox, and Madden Mulawka will be auctioned off.

As for tomorrow, the same will be said for the jerseys of Kristian Coombs, Nolan Patterson, Owen Nelson, Zayden Sadlemyer, Ashton Hutchinson, and Brayden Westerlund.

Also on Saturday, there will be a pancake breakfast along with the Calcutta auction and shootout.

The pancake breakfast will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the curling rink, with the Calcutta auction to follow at 11:15 a.m.

The breakfast will be $10 a plate, while the Calcutta shootout will follow tomorrow night’s match against the Hounds.

Both puck drops this weekend are slated for 7:30 p.m.
