Mustangs win third straight one-goal game, Andrusiak wins Calcutta shootout

For the third time in four days, the Melfort Mustangs picked up a victory that didn’t come easy.

After a 3-2 overtime victory on Wednesday over the Estevan Bruins, Melfort avoided a third-period collapse against the Nipawin Hawks on Friday, pulling out a 4-3 shootout win.

Then, on Saturday night, the Mustangs won in regulation, taking down the Notre Dame Hounds, but once again, it was just by a single goal, as the game ended in a 2-1 score.

For the Stangs it doesn’t matter, however, as they won all three of their home games this week, which just happened to also be Parent/Billet appreciation weekend.

With the trio of victories, the Blue and Green have also recaptured first place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

Now sitting at 14-4 (8-2 in their last 10) Melfort is a point above the Weyburn Red Wings (28 to 27), with two games in hand.

Because the Mustangs had their parents and billets around this weekend, that also meant they were hosting their annual Calcutta shootout.

Winning it was 20-year-old, Tisdale native, Nic Andrusiak.

The assistant captain defenceman beat out Zach Turner, Will Munro, and Tye Scherger in the final round.

Meanwhile, Kristian Coombs won the goaltending category.

The Stangs will now head on the road for all of their three games this coming week.

The Blue and Green will begin on Tuesday in Yorkton when they take on the Terriers for the first of four meetings this season.
