Melfort Fire Department holding recruitment drive

Nov 19, 2024 | 5:24 PM

The Melfort Fire Department is looking for a few new recruits.

Their recruitment drive is now underway and runs through Dec. 6. Successful applicants will be interviewed the following week.

Fire Chief Leonard Whitney told northeastNOW they’re reaching out to anyone who has thought of being a volunteer firefighter.

“Reaching out there to anybody that’s ever thought of possibly joining the fire department, or looking for more information, or anybody that wants to try to come see what it’s all about,” Whitney said.

He said sometimes people feel apprehensive to approach the fire department, but with the recruitment they can make it easier for anyone interested to contact them.

The department held an open house in October and Whitney said they had hundreds of people come through the door. The open house helped increase interest in the department.

“We did actually get a couple of people that were interested come and check out a few practices,” explained Whitney. “We have two applications…from that night.”

Whitney said all firefighters are properly trained before they’re put on the front lines. A skills training weekend is held to get everybody up to speed on the basics, and weekly practices are held with the whole team for firefighters to hone their skills.

The fire department currently has openings for four new firefighters, and Whitney hopes to fill those positions with their recruitment drive.
