The Saskatchewan RCMP arrested a man from British Columbia after seizing 50 kilograms of cocaine during a traffic stop on Highway 16 near Maidstone.

Last Thursday, the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit (RTU) conducted proactive patrols that led to the arrest of a 31-year-old man from Surrey, B.C., with the help of a police dog. During the search, officers discovered not only cocaine but also a sum of cash.

“This investigation illustrates the ability of our traffic officers to disrupt criminal activity on Saskatchewan roadways. The officers – with the help of a police dog – used keen investigative skills to remove over 50 kilograms of cocaine from the illegal market,” said Supt. Grant St. Germaine, the officer in charge of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services, in a release.

After further investigation, the man is now charged with one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possessing property obtained by crime. He is scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on Nov. 15.
