Nominations for the annual Samuel Mcleod Business Awards (SMBA) are now open for its 34th installment.

The awards are handed out by the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce and gives P.A. and surrounding areas an opportunity to have their favourite businesses recognized.

“This is a very prestigious business award to receive,” said Patty Hughes, the CEO of the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce. “It is an award of excellence that is highly celebrated within our community.”

Like in years prior, there will be 12 awards being handed out, including Business Transformation, Business Leader of the Year, Community Involvement, Customer Service, Diversity in the Workplace, Indigenous Business, New Venture, Marketing, Micro-Enterprise of the Year, Non-Profit of the Year, Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and Business of the Year.

Compared to years past, Hughes said she expects there to be many nominations coming in for 2024.

“Prince Albert’s business community has seen an increase, especially with our economic development that has happened. We’ve had some real rejuvenation of some buildings here in Prince Albert and [we’re] really looking forward to receiving some of those applications.”

Any business can apply for an SMBA, however, it is a lengthy process and the qualifying factors are strict.

“There’s quite a vetting process that we go through to make sure that the businesses, as well as people… there is a significant application process that they go through to be considered one of the finalists.”

“We contact all of the nominees, send them the application forms and they go through the application process. We also have our judges; they complete the reviewing of all the applications in all of the categories.”

Nominations for the Samuel Mcleod Business Awards are set to close at the beginning of the New Year, and nominees who were sent application forms have until the end of January to submit them.

The finalists will be announced in March during the annual Legacy Brunch, and the Awards will be handed out in April.
