Tough battle in Estevan leads to North Stars loss in OT

Nov 24, 2024 | 10:40 AM

The Battlefords North Stars were unsuccessful again on Saturday against the Estevan Bruins as they lost 1-0 in overtime at Affinity Place.

The North Stars came out strong in the first period, outshooting the Bruins 11-7 and controlling most of the puck possession but they still couldn’t find the back of the net.

As the game continued on, both teams had some good chances but neither could seem to get on the board and eventually after 60 minutes of play, the game went to overtime.

The North Stars did get a five-minute major penalty nearing the end of regulation though, so coming out for overtime it was four-on-three for the Bruins.

This eventually resulted in a goal for Estevan as they scored on a missed shot that bounced off the back wall and landed behind Justen Maric, making for an easy poke into the back of the net to win the game 1-0.

The biggest issue for the North Stars last night was the powerplay, as they went 0/9 on the man advantage, including two five-on-threes.

Battlefords also got outshot 35 to 30 but did stop Estevan eight out of nine times on the penalty kill. Justen Maric stopped 29/30 shots on goal.

The North Stars now sit at 11-6-3-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL) on the season with 26 points, putting them tied at 3rd overall in the league with Yorkton.

The North Stars next game is this Tuesday, Nov. 26th against the Hawks in Nipawin with puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
