Melfort Legion receives 10,000 from 100 Women Who Care

The latest benefactor from the generous 100 Women Who Care chapter in Melfort has been revealed.

The Melfort Legion has received $10,000 from the organization that sees 100 women get together and donate $100 each four times a year, with local non-profits receiving the proceeds.

Legion President Jim Graham told northeastNOW they were thrilled to receive the donation from the 100 Women Who Care organization that he said is a good movement for the community.

The Melfort Legion uses their Poppy Campaign to raise money for veterans in need, while most of their other fundraising efforts go toward maintenance of their facility and to cover utilities. The $10,000 received through the 100 Women Who Care will help ensure the facility is maintained and the Legion’s community involvement continues.

“It’s a big job,” said Graham. “We need about $25,000 a year just to pay our utilities and minor maintenance.”

The Melfort Legion’s main building is over 100 years old and significant maintenance is required. Recent roof repairs have been tackled, along with the boiler replacement just over a year ago that cost $80,000, and recent flooring and window replacement.

Graham said they have undertaken $8,000 worth of emergency roof repairs, and the ongoing tar and gravel roof and gold trim repair at the Branch this spring is a main priority.

Plus Industries and KidSport also made presentations at Monday’s 100 Women Who Care quarterly meeting, and Graham said he felt a little guilty taking home the donation with such worthy organizations also presenting their case.

Graham said the Legion has also been helped in their efforts to maintain their facility through grants, fundraising meals, raffles, bingo, and a golf tournament. They will continue to keep people updated about fundraisers and other events on their social media pages.

“The other great thing that 100 Women Who Care are doing here is allow us to get our story out in front of people about our raison d’être and what we do,” said Graham. He said support for veterans through their Poppy Campaign is a main priority, but their membership and facility sustainment are also a significant portion of the Legion.

“The building itself is kind of like our centre of gravity,” explained Graham. “If we didn’t have that we wouldn’t do near as well on the poppy fund, and we might shrivel up and die at some point in time.”

Graham said there are young veterans now that need a helping hand from time to time, and added the Legion is part of the fabric of the community, and the community has come back to show their support for the Legion.

“I’m just overwhelmed by this.”

Previous winners were the North Central Health Care Foundation, Melfort Arts Council, and Believe in the Gold Melfort.
