Local hockey game raises significant funds for Movember once again

The Jansen BHP team stepped up for Movember again this year, in the form of a local hockey match.

The annual contest pits BHP Team Jansen’s integrated project members and its site contractors against one another. The contractors won the game 11-7, officially earning the first-round series win, 4-2.

While the game, which takes place in Leroy, itself is just more of a staple of the annual campaign, raising just a couple of thousand dollars each year, it does bring out community members and MLAs to raise awareness around the importance of men’s health. The specific concern is prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

For Maury Simoneau in particular, who’s been with BHP for 13 years now and has always been the captain or co-captain of the squad, this campaign is always a personal one.

“I started with Movember after my dad was diagnosed with stage one prostate cancer,” he said. Luckily enough his father had early detection and went on to live an additional 15 years until his passing in 2017. “Now, I do this for my brother who has unfortunately been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. He’s in his eighth year or two percentile of living and continues to battle like a champ,” Simoneau said.

“Within BHP we have a global challenge where all of our assets around the world have Movember teams and we thought about what we could do to make it uniquely Canadian and something that our colleagues around the globe would think was awesome. The game is all about camaraderie and coming together as a team.”

In the last six years, the BHP Jansen team has rallied around men’s health by raising over $400,000.

Between the company itself and how much the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League was involved in Movember this year, Simoneau is beyond proud of his home province.

“BHP is a fantastic company, they have a terrific set of values and they’ve given myself and the rest of our employees a platform to really have the courage to speak up, start the conversations with the men in our life, and have some fun while we’re doing good,” he added.

“To see the SJHL rally around the cause is fantastic, each and every year it seems like more awareness is being raised. I look at all the teams this month and see a bunch of awesome dusters (moustaches). It’s great to see the players and coaches getting involved and I just want to thank the league and commend the teams for rallying around the movement.”

Simoneau concluded his thoughts by stressing the importance of annual checkups and consistent conversations for all men.
