Fundraising for critical care, close to home

At 20 months old, Devlynn was already a regular patient at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. She had chronic kidney failure, heart problems, and other serious complications.

Her family, from Shoal Lake Cree Nation, struggled to manage her complex needs, but Judy, a pediatric nurse who had treated Devlynn, volunteered to become her foster parent and eventually adopted her.

“I’m her legal guardian, but she’s still connected to her family in Shoal Lake,” Judy said.

Devlynn is awaiting a kidney transplant and Judy said she’s grateful the Victoria Hospital can provide so much of Devlynn’s care close to home.

“We have really good healthcare in Prince Albert and a great pediatric ward,” she said. “We’re lucky to access care here, thanks to donors who support local healthcare. It’s not just where we live, it’s also where Devlynn’s biological family is and it’s extremely important to maintain a close relationship with them. They keep Devlynn connected to her roots and her Indigenous culture. And we can all support her together.”

The 19th annual Give a Little Life Day fundraiser will help make access to exceptional healthcare possible for even more patients. The radiothon, that gets underway at 6 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, supports the Victoria Hospital, raising essential funds to ensure families across Northern Saskatchewan have access to critical care close to home.

The Boreal Healthcare Foundation said last year, support helped fund essential items that improved patient care and allowed hundreds of infants and families to benefit from the state-of-the-art NICU for the North.

This year, every dollar donated will be matched by the Malcolm J. Jenkins Family Foundation, doubling the impact of every gift up to a total of $25,000. In a news release, the foundation said Jenkins’ generosity is rooted in gratitude for the exceptional care his late wife received at Victoria Hospital, and he is committed to ensuring others can receive the same quality of care.

The radiothon gets underway at 6 a.m. on 900 CKBI, Power99 FM and 101.5 Beach Radio. Donations can be made in person at Mann Northway through the ease of the drive-through bay or by calling 1-855-816-LIFE. Donations can also be made online at givealittlelife.ca.

Since its conception in 2005, the Give a Little Life Day radiothon has raised over $8.3 million.
