Lake Lenore native commits to University of Manitoba Bisons

A girl hockey player from the northeast has just committed to furthering her hockey dreams.

Lake Lenore native Claire Moorman has agreed to play with the University of Manitoba Bisons for the 2025-26 season.

“I was really excited to commit, it wasn’t really a huge surprise, but I’ve working for this for a long time, and my coaches and parents have really supported me, so it was really nice to finally commit somewhere,” Moorman told northeastNOW.

“I went and toured their campus and I really liked it, it was very similar to the U of S and close enough to home for me. When I come back to play Regina and Saskatoon, my parents will be able to come and watch me play.”

Moorman has already had the opportunity to play away from home, having spent the last three years of her hockey career (including this season) as a member of the U18 AAA Saskatoon Stars.

The 17-year-old defenceman said that experience in particular should set her up nicely for this next chapter.

“It’ll be a big help because I’ve already lived away from my parents, so girls that haven’t done that yet, it’ll be a bit of a shock for them. Saskatoon has just helped me prepare and know how it goes without having my parents around,” she added.

“Manitoba is a bit further away from home and that excites me. It’s still close enough and just a nice opportunity.”

Playing with the Stars has also played extreme importance in Moorman’s development.

According to her, the team has been successful every season she’s been there and has given her plenty of time on the ice.

“All three years our team has had a lot of success, so it’s nice having lots of winning chances. The team overall too, I love it, and I’m living away from home, so I kind of have to love it in order to stay away, but yeah, I’ve really enjoyed it,” Moorman explained.

“Being on the ice six times a week really impacts you in a good way too, it allows me to get better every single day through practices, workouts and game play.”

Moorman began playing hockey at just four years old, saying it was one of the few things to do in a small town.

She fell in love with it right away though, and is beyond grateful for the person Lake Lenore has made her today.

“Being in a small town really developed me as a person and gave me that opportunity to play. I had to play with the boys, and I was the only girl on my team for quite a long time, but it really gave me a different point of view and perspective of the game,” concluded Moorman.

“I just want to thank all my coaches, family, and friends who supported me throughout the whole journey.”

Moorman plans to study to become a physiotherapist at the U of M and would also like to coach once she completes her team as a student-athlete.
