Local fire departments urging people to avoid ice with early snow, fluctuating temps

The Humboldt Fire Department is recommending caution when it comes to going out on the ice.

“The ice is very unpredictable this year due to the early snowfall and the drastic changes in temperature,” the department said on their social media pages. They recommend that people stay off the ice until the conditions improve, and if people need to go on the ice to take extra precautions.

They also had some tips for people that fall through the ice.

Their first piece of advice is to keep all protective gear on, as snowsuits and helmets can help people stay afloat for a few minutes. The department recommends getting your head above water and maintaining control of your breathing.

Another key is to swim to the edge of the solid ice you were on before you fell in and jab a sharp object like a knife if you have one into the ice so you can pull on it. Don’t put weight on your elbows when pulling yourself up; kick your feet as hard as you can and pull yourself up quickly with your forearms.

If the ice breaks off, keep trying on the next solid edge. Once you’re back on the ice – crawl, don’t walk as you may break through again. You must then take action to prevent hypothermia.

If you can’t get yourself out of the water, keep as much of your upper body out of the water as possible, keep your arms still, and call for help.

The Melfort Fire Department’s practice this week focused on ice rescues, as crews cut a hole in the ice to practice several rescue techniques.

“Please use extreme caution when going out in the ice and make sure the ice is thick enough to enjoy your winter activities,” the MFD said on their social media page.
