Weekend rink report: Mintos swept by Moose Jaw, Northern Bears split in Regina

Dec 8, 2024 | 6:22 PM

It was another busy weekend on the ice for Prince Albert based hockey teams.

Here’s how each team faired in their weekend matchups:

Mintos swept by Moose Jaw in weekend set

The Prince Albert Mintos saw their losing streak extend to three on Sunday following their weekend series against the Moose Jaw WINMAR Warriors at the Art Hauser Centre.

Game one happened a day earlier on Saturday, and saw the visitors scored a touchdown en route to the win.

After P.A. found themselves down 5-0 heading into the third, the Mintos finally found their footing and managed to strike back early. Simon Garchinski converted on the powerplay 56 seconds in, which was followed by a Kelan Simmonds marker a minute later, and Lincoln Rogers goal midway through the frame.

With the score now 5-3 with just over five minutes to play, Moose Jaw’s Wade Franks and Ryan Gibbs scored to extend the lead to four. P.A. would get the final marker though, as Luke Senick found the back of the net with 47 seconds left on the clock to end the game with a 7-4 score.

Jayden Blanchette was handed the loss between the pipes for the Mintos, making 35 saves.

Game two began the same with the Warriors striking first, thanks to Keaton Lesperance’s powerplay tally.

This time however, the Mintos had a response with Kelan Simmonds pulling P.A. back to even a few minutes later as the score remained tied at one entering the second.

There, the Warriors regained the lead and kept on building, while the Mintos couldn’t find the back of the net for the remainder of the game. Following Kierin Osberg’s go-ahead goal in the second, Gage Nagel and Carson Park added separate powerplay goals in the third to help the Warriors prevail, 4-1.

Netminder Josh Henry was between the pipes for game two, stopping 35 shots in the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game two)

After the weekend, the Mintos now sit fourth in league standings with a 14-8-2 (W-L-OTL) record.

P.A. returns to the ice on Wednesday when they welcome the Tisdale Trojans to the Art Hauser Centre for the first time this season. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.

Northern Bears split weekend series in Queen City

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears are returning home from the provincial capital with four of a possible six points.

The Bears were in Regina taking on the Rebels where they split their weekend set.

After the Rebels entered the second with a one goal lead in game one on Saturday, Prince Albert managed to tie it with Aliya Clarke’s second of the season.

Now in the third tied at one, Emma Sveinbjornson put Regina back on top with a marker on the man advantage before Jersie Andersen tied it at two in the final minutes to force overtime.

However, it would be the Rebels who got the last laugh as Ella Newton played hero for the home team, helping Regina take the win 3-2 in overtime.

Between the pipes was Annika Neufeldt who turned aside 33 shots in the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game one)

Game two was quiet for the majority of the contest, until the lamp finally turned on in the third period.

Northern Bears rookie Londyn Hoffman got P.A. on the board, giving them their first lead of the weekend. They built on that marker, adding another later in the frame courtesy of Olivia Trann with less than four minutes to play.

Nikita Krayetski remained tall in net and managed to hang on for the 32 save shutout and 2-0 win, which was also her first win of the season and first shutout at the AAA level.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game two)

Following the weekend, the Bears are fifth in league standings with a 4-7-0-2 (W-L-OTW-OTL) record.

The Northern Bears return to Prince Albert for their next game, when they face the Rebels on Dec. 21 at the Art Hauser Centre. A day later, the Bears will welcome the Swift Current Wildcats to P.A. for their final game of 2024.
