Buckland council delays decision on liquor store application

Dec 9, 2024 | 11:19 AM

No decision was made today on an application to rezone some farmland north of Prince Albert to allow for a liquor and convenience store along Highway 2.

The RM of Buckland said this morning that council voted to delay the decision until their February meeting.

Opposition to the application by residents in that area was strong at a public hearing just prior to the election in November.

Many residents said they were concerned about traffic safety at that location, where Highway 2 meets with Cloarec Road.

Dozens of people showed up at the October 9 meeting in Prince Albert to voice their opposition.

Ryan Bernard, representing himself and fellow applicants told people he had bought 55 acres of land with the idea of turning four acres into a business and farming the rest.

“Obviously, there’s a lot of opinions that want to be expressed and I value hearing each and every one of you guys. I didn’t get into this to make a bunch of enemies. I’m glad we’re here having this discussion, and I hope it can be a productive one,” he said during his presentation.

He also offered to remove the drive-thru aspect of the liquor store business and replace it with a delivery service instead and set the business hours from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

With safety the largest source of concern, Sask. Highways told paNOW in November that long term, they have a plan to twin Highway 2 as far as the White Star Road but no date has been set for construction.
