Pair of Weekend Wins

Mustangs sweep Broncos with dominant road effort

The Melfort Mustangs met with the Humboldt Broncos for the first time this season, playing a weekend home-and-home set against their out-of-division rivals.

The streaking Mustangs pulled off the two-game sweep on Saturday night, following a 3-2 comeback victory on Friday, with a dominant road effort resulting in a 5-2 win.

“It feels good, our rivalry is set through the roof, so to win both is awesome. Glad the boys got it done, they fought a hard 60 each night, so it’s good for them,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

Melfort never trailed in Humboldt on Saturday, scoring the first goal of the game less than three minutes in.

It was Logan Keup’s first career SJHL goal to put the Stangs on top, never looking back from that moment on.

The Blue and Green made it 2-0 heading to the second period, before scoring three more unanswered, following the Broncos cutting it to 2-1.

Humboldt added their second late to end the game 5-2.

Melfort’s defence and penalty kill were the story of the weekend going 11-for-11, despite being without captain Ty Thornton and losing Nolan Roberts and Cole Unger.

“Same thing as last year, just next man up, that’s the mentality you got to have. You got to come to work and that showed tonight. Good for Keup to get his first one as well,” Scherger added.

The Mustangs are now 23-4 on the season, 11 points ahead of second place.

With just three games now remaining before Christmas, all of which will come against the bottom two teams in the league, the organization will look to set themselves up well for the second half of their schedule.
