Council welcomes Métis Nation housing plan with unanimous vote

Prince Albert city council did not hesitate to approve two re-zonings that will pave the next step of the way for the Métis Nation –Saskatchewan to build a subdivision of tiny homes.

The planning department had no hesitation in recommending that council proceed.

“We’ve been working very closely with our Métis Nation –Saskatchewan partners,” said Director of Community Development Craig Guidinger. ‘It’s a very exciting project just south of the Field House in Prince Albert.”

The 35-lot subdivision was already approved, and council was presented on Monday with bylaws to change the land use density to allow for the much smaller lots asked for and to close a portion of street that only exists on paper.

“It creates housing opportunities for all members of our community in a market that is currently not being met. This is fully supported by us as administration,” Guidinger said.

The MN—S began construction of its new service centre just south of the Alfred Jenkins Field House earlier this summer. To the west of that they want to build what are essentially tiny homes connected as townhouses.

To do that, the city needed to allow six-metre wide lots for townhouses to be purchased, rather than just available for rent.

The service centre has begun construction and is at the framing stage.

An offer from Lake Country Co-op to purchase the parcel of land between the MN—S and Alfred Jenkins Field House was removed from the agenda at the beginning of the meeting at the request of administration.

Co-op has an outstanding liquor license that it has not used and put an offer on the land to build a commercial space that would include a liquor store and other retail space.

The City of Prince Albert caps the number of liquor store permits in the city at 10 and the Co-op permit is not an expansion of the number.
