Mustangs begin final week before Christmas in Wilcox

Dec 17, 2024 | 2:07 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are on the road Tuesday as they travel down south to Wilcox to take on the Notre Dame Hounds.

The contest marks the first of three games for the Mustangs this week, which will wrap up the 2024 portion of their season.

Melfort enters their first meeting of the season in Notre Dame on a 12-game win streak.

The Stangs extended it to 12 over the weekend, with a pair of victories over their rival Humboldt Broncos.

The Blue and Green have a legitimate shot to carry their winning ways into the new year with games this week against the Hounds and two against the Nipawin Hawks. The two teams sit at the bottom of the standings.

“We just have to stick to the game plan, and come into the rink and put in the work. We have to get better every single day because there’s still a lot of work to get done,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“The boys have great attitudes and they always come to the rink wanting to get better. They’re working their butts off, so I’m excited to see these next three games.”

The Mustangs won their only previous matchup against Notre Dame, which came back at the Palace on Nov. 16.

That game in particular was a close one, as the final score finished 2-1, coming in a six-game stretch where Melfort won five of them by just a single goal.

The Stangs have now won the next six by a combined 27 goals, outscoring their opponents 35-8.

The Blue and Green will be in tough, however, as they’ll enter their game with the Hounds without three of their top six defencemen.

Captain Ty Thornton, as well as Nolan Roberts and Cole Unger will not be in the lineup tonight.

Puck drop at the Duncan McNeil Arena is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
