The success just doesn’t seem to stop for the Battlefords AAA Sharks as they grabbed third place at the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament this past weekend against some of the tops teams and prep schools in the country,

Their first game on Thursday, Dec.12th was against Edge Prep, the #7 ranked girls prep school in the country. The Sharks opened up the scoring in the first and added another one in the second to lead 2-0 going into the third. Edge was able to get one goal of their own, but the Sharks came away with a 2-1 victory.

On Friday, Dec 13th the Sharks played two games with the first one being against the Weyburn Gold Wings. This was the third time the Sharks played the Gold Wings this season, and they walked away with an easy 4-0 win.

In the next game, they took on Calgary Fire Red for the fist time this season. This was a close game that called for overtime, being tied 1-1 after the third. In overtime though, it was the Sharks who sealed the deal on a goal from Sarah McNabb to win 2-1 and advance to the semi-finals.

For the semis, the Sharks took on a very good Shawnigan Lake Prep School team who was ranked #4 in the country. After being down 2-1 in the second period, the Sharks had lots of powerplay chances to try and answer back but in the end Shawnigan pulled away to win 4-1, sending the Sharks to the bronze medal game.

“Shawnigan Lake is one of the top academies in the country and it was one of those games that really wasn’t a four-one game. We had a lot of good chances and our effort in the game itself was great and we had great pace.” said Nolan Horbach, Head Coach of the Sharks.

In the bronze game, Battleford took on the Lloydminster PWM Steelers, a team they beat earlier on in the year at the Firestarter tournament in Calgary. This time was no different as the Sharks won the game 3-2 to bring home the 3rd place.

“I think at some point the weekend we had everybody step up and contribute, which is something that we want to focus on for being a complete team. I love the little things that we did and the stuff that you might not see on the ice. Just the resiliency, when we were down in a couple games and we didn’t quit. Our bench was really engaged, active and that’s something that we’ve been working on and it was nice to see that pay off for the girls.” said Horbach.

The Sharks have their final two games of 2024 this Saturday, Dec 21st and Sunday, Dec. 22nd at the Battleford Arena before they head on Christmas break.
