Look back, look ahead in Horizon School Division

Dec 24, 2024 | 8:00 AM

The Horizon School Division’s Director of Education is looking back at 2024, and ahead at what promises to be a busy 2025 in the region.

Director of Education Kevin Garinger said the calendar year was exciting for the division.

“This year, we have seen incredible growth, resilience, and collaboration across our schools, staff, and students,” Garinger told northeastNOW. “Together, we are creating environments where every learner feels valued and supported, and where innovation and care go hand in hand.”

Garinger cited several initiatives that are exciting for the division, including the Michif Language Program that has been established at Wakaw School exemplifying partnerships with Metis Nation-Saskatchewan.

Muenster School’s Headstrong Project received the prestigious Public Schools of Saskatchewan Student Citizenship Award, which recognizes initiatives fostering citizenship and character building. Wynyard Elementary School was a Mosaic School Nutrition Challenge winner, supporting student cooking classes and land-based earning in a renovated cooking lab.

Looking ahead to 2025, construction of Lanigan School continues, with a project opening in the spring. Renovations at Robert Melrose Elementary School and Kelvington High School are also well underway, with the newly renovated facilities to be finished in 2025. Portable classrooms are due to be completed early in the year to deal with overcapacity at Humboldt Public School and Humboldt Collegiate Institute.

“On behalf of the Board of Education, thank you to everyone who has contributed to making 2024 a remarkable year,” said Garinger.
