Year in Review: Luthi sets personal best and completes major marathons

A Melfort athlete had a fantastic 2024, becoming a six-star finisher.

Robyn Luthi completed the New York Marathon in November, completing all six major marathons across the globe.

To top it off, Luthi set a personal best by finishing the marathon in just over two hours and 50 minutes, eight minutes faster than her previous best.

“I’m really excited that I’ve done all of the six world majors (marathons) – it’s a really big accomplishment for me,” Luthi told northeastNOW after the New York Marathon.

Luthi finished seventh in her age group in the marathon and was number 89 of over 24,000 women who finished the marathon. She said the course is one of the tougher majors due to hilly sections. The New York crowd helped Luthi during the race, and she called it the best crowd of any of the major marathons.

Luthi was taking some time off before completing a half-marathon in preparation for the Chicago Marathon in 2025. She has finished the Chicago course before and chose to run it again to improve her personal best time that she set in New York.

“Now that I’ve ran a 2:50, I think I can go sub-2:50 on that course,” Luthi said. “Chicago’s one of my favourite courses, and it’s really flat and it’s really fast.”

Sydney, Australia has also been named a major marathon, and Luthi hoped to tackle that course in the next year or so.
