Year in Review: Melfort Comets beat Tisdale for provincial football gold

The Melfort Comets became provincial champions in 2024, defeating the Tisdale Tornadoes 86-27 in the 9-aside final in November.

The Comets used several big plays by running back David Goudy to stake themselves to a significant lead.

Goudy scored six touchdowns on the day, including five of over 50 yards.

Comets head coach David Rogers told northeastNOW his team had a strong performance against a team they played twice during the regular season.

“Our kids put in the work, the effort, and the preparation, and it showed up today on the field,” Rogers said after the game.

Melfort opened the game with a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, with the Comets opening their lead to 42-6 through two quarters of play.

The Comets recovered an onside kick attempt to start the third, opening up a 58-6 lead in the third quarter.

The lead expanded to 79-6 but Tisdale showed a lot of heart to score a pair of touchdowns to make it 79-20. The teams then traded majors to complete the score.

Melfort won the championship for the first time since 2022. The Tornadoes made a triumphant return to the provincial championship for the first time since 1981.

The Comets had eleven players end their football career with a gold medal and Tisdale saw eight Tornadoes graduate with a silver medal.
