Inquest into RCMP shooting death of Trent Angus to begin next month in North Battleford

Jan 9, 2025 | 12:12 PM

An inquest set to begin in February will examine the death of 33-year-old Trent Angus, who was shot and killed by RCMP officers after allegedly firing a handgun at the Mounties.

According to a Ministry of Justice release on Thursday, Angus was wanted in connection with a drug and firearm trafficking investigation and was killed after he engaged in an armed confrontation with members of the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) during a search warrant operation at a quonset in Waseca on Feb. 26, 2022.

Upon executing the warrant, three individuals exited the building and surrendered. However, a gun was fired from inside the structure, striking an RCMP officer outside.

Following the shot, Angus then exited the building and refused to comply with police commands. Officers shot a 40 mm less-lethal foam projectile that struck Angus, but he continued to resist.

Angus then pulled out a 9 mm handgun and fired at officers, which led to officers firing back and an ERT member shooting Angus, causing a fatal injury. He was declared deceased at the scene.

An inquest examining the cause and manner of Angus’ death is set run from February 10-14 at the Dekker Centre in North Battleford, with coroner William Davern presiding.

After the inquest, the coroner’s jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations designed to prevent similar deaths in the future.
