Safety upgrades expected on Highway 3 through Shellbrook

The Mayor of Shellbrook says an 80km/hr speed limit through town limits raises serious safety concerns.

That’s the reason why the community has asked the Ministry of Highways to have both the speed limit lowered on the section of Highway 3 to 50km/hr and to install a pedestrian crossing.

“We’ve had some concerned parents and teachers and observers say kids bolt across there sometimes and it’s quite a wide median and so therefore we are concerned about safety,” Mayor Amund Otterson told paNOW.

On the north side of the highway are popular fast food restaurants Dairy Queen and Subway, and the local Co-Op C-store is also expanding. The town has also received a letter of support from the R.M. of Shellbrook.

“And, in fact the businesses that are being supported by these children bolting across the highway are in the R.M. of Shellbrook,” Otterson said.

On Wednesday, town officials met with representatives from the government and were told a consultant would come and look at what’s happening to make recommendations on how to best remedy safety concerns.

“We are very encouraged by that,” the Mayor said.

Otterson also noted there is some SGI grant money which could be used towards the project.

A statement provided to paNOW by the Ministry of Highways confirmed they have received requests from both the Town of Shellbrook and the R.M. of Shellbrook No. 493 to install a pedestrian crossing and to reduce the speed on Highway 3 through town.

“The ministry will work with the town and the RM to develop a plan to ensure this request is implemented safely for the communities and provincial highway motorists,” they said, adding they expect to have a plan by summer.
