Northern Bears fall short in shootout to Stars

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears managed to salvage a point in Saskatoon on Thursday, narrowly falling 3-2 in a shootout to the Stars at Merlis Belcher Place.

The loss marks the second straight for Prince Albert where they dropped a 5-4 decision on Sunday against Notre Dame.

With Saskatoon leading 1-0 heading into the second, the Stars added to their lead in the back half of the frame off the tape of Claire Moorman. Less than a minute later, Shayla Koroll took an interference penalty to send the Bears to the powerplay, where Aliya Clarke found the back of the net to pull the game back to within one.

Fast forward to the final moments of the contest and Jersie Andersen cashed in with one second remaining on the clock to force overtime. Nothing was solved after that so the game was decided in a shootout.

After the Bears and Stars traded goals in the first two rounds, P.A.’s Zoey Krienke was stopped in round three leaving the door wide open for Saskatoon. The Stars sent Halle Duchene to the line with the game on her stick and she scored the winner for their seventh straight win.

Annika Neufeldt was between the pipes for the Bears, making 37 saves as P.A. falls to 5-9-1-3 (W-L-OTL-SOL) on the campaign.

The Northern Bears return home this weekend as they prepare to welcome the Weyburn Gold Wings to the Art Hauser Centre for a pair of contests on Saturday and Sunday. Puck drop for both games is set for 1:30 p.m.
