The Battlefords North Stars got their revenge against the Humboldt Broncos on Saturday, beating them 5-4 in a shootout to close out the home-and-home after losing to them 5-3 the night prior.

The big star of the night was 2005-born forward and North Dakota product Colton Getzlaff who had all four goals for the North Stars in regulation as well as the shootout game-winner.

In the first period, the North Stars opened up the scoring with a powerplay goal on their first shot of the game coming from Getzlaff to take an early 1-0 lead. The Broncos didn’t take long to answer back as they got two goals in a row to take the lead 2-1 midway through the opening frame.

Nearing the final two minutes of the first, Battlefords was able to tie it up on another goal from Getzlaff, making it 2-2 going into the second.

Coming out for the middle stanza, Humboldt found some momentum despite being short-handed and was able to grab another goal to retake the lead 3-2. The lead lasted for a majority of the period until finally Getzlaff used his hot hand to find the back of the net again, tying the game 3-3 to claim a hat-trick going into the third.

There, the Broncos were able to get the first goal again and took the lead back, making it 4-3 just five minutes in. Later, Battlefords outplayed the Broncos but still had a hard time lighting the lamp. That was until they got a powerplay opportunity and Getzlaff was able to find another goal to tie it up at four-all and force overtime.

In the extra frame, both teams traded great scoring chances but even then nobody could seem to strike the nylon so the game went to a shootout.

Humboldt was up first and missed their chance but so did the North Stars, keeping it even going into the second shooter. The Broncos’ second shooter also missed giving the North Stars a chance to take the lead and of course, it was Getzlaff scoring on his chance to give the North Stars the edge.

It all came down to Humboldt’s third shooter to extend the game but the North Stars net-minder, Thomas Samborksi made a big save and Battlefords ended up taking the victory, 5-4.

The North Stars outshot the Broncos 43-36, went 2/4 on the powerplay and stopped Humboldt all three times on the penalty kill. Thomas Samborski stopped 32/36 shots in the game as well as all three shooters in the shootout.

Battlefords record now improves to 20-13-3-2 (W-L-OTL-SOL) on the season for 45 points, putting them tied at 4th overall in the league with Yorkton.

The North Stars next game is this Thursday, Jan. 23 against the Melville Millionaires at the Access Communications Centre with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
