Jan 22, 2025 | 6:00 AM

With wrestlers from all over Saskatchewan and even one team from Manitoba in attendance, Prince Albert schools Ecole St. Mary High School and Carlton Comprehensive High School sent a total of 54 wrestlers to O’Neill High School in Regina last weekend for the 2025 Titans Wrestling Classic.

St. Mary’s not only won the tournament overall, but their 46 wrestlers brought home 14 gold medals, 13 silver, and eight bronze for a total of 35 medals. Carlton’s much smaller team only sent eight wrestlers, who altogether brought home one gold and one bronze.

Two highlights from the tournament saw Tymofiy Kvashulko win every match of a crowded 77kg elite male’s division capped off by an amazing gold medal final match to earn the tournament MVP award. The other highlight saw the young Emily Groves compete in both novice and elite divisions, coming away with two medals from the tournament.

St. Mary’s and Carlton wrestlers met up in the gold medal final once during the tournament at the end of the elite female 73kg weight class, and Carlton’s Noah Remy managed to win over St. Mary’s Denaya Neudorf.

Full results:

Wrestling matches consist of two three minute rounds. Wrestlers can win a match one of three ways: having more points than their opponent after two six-minute rounds, getting a 10 point lead over your opponent at any time, or pinning their opponents shoulders to the mat at any time for a pinfall even if they are behind their opponent in points.

Elite brackets:

Elite brackets are for wrestlers in grade 11 or above, or for wrestlers that have competed in wrestling for at least two years regardless of what grade they are in. Each bracket is a single elimination bracket where one loss would send you to the bronze medal side, and a second loss eliminates you from the tournament. The losers of the bronze semifinal do face off for a fifth and sixth place match.

Female 50kg: Emily Groves (Silver, St. Mary’s)

Groves not only competed in the elite 50kg weight class, but also competed in the 49-51kg novice bracket for a total of five matches in two days.

In the elite bracket, Groves was given a bye in the first two round thanks to a nine wrestler bracket. She won her first match via pinfall in the second period after going up 6-0, and her opponent in the fourth round forfeited due to injury.

That sent Groves to the gold medal match, and she got out to an early lead with a four point takedown, but her opponent managed to turn things around to pin Groves and give her the silver medal in the elite bracket. She’d win gold in her novice bracket.

Female 53kg: Sydney Rumbosa (Gold, St. Mary’s)

Rumbosa won her first match via pinfall seven seconds into the second round, earned 10-0 win in her second match, and finished the gold medal match in just 42 second with a pinfall victory.

Female 60kg: Emma Forseth (Sixth, Carlton)

Female 64kg: Nelly Charles (Gold, St. Mary’s), Cecilia Wilson (Silver, St. Mary’s), and Gabriella Puetespina (St. Mary’s)

Half of the six wrestlers in the Female 64kg weight class came from St. Mary’s. Puentespina was given a bye in the first round, and Wilson won her first match in the via pinfall 1:34 in. Wilson and Puentespina faced off in the second round with the winner earned a spot in the gold medal match, and Puetespina got out to a four point lead before Wilson came back and won by a score of 14-4 to move on.

Charles won her first round match via pinfall in 1:05, and then went on to win via pinfall again in the second match in 3:01. That set up an all St. Mary’s final between Charles and Wilson, and Charles took the win via pinfall 2:36 seconds in.

Puentespina was injured and did not compete in the bronze side bracket.

Female 73kg: Noah Remy (Gold, Carlton) and Denaya Neudorf (Silver, St. Mary’s)

There were ten wrestlers in the 73kg female bracket. Remy advanced through rounds one and two thanks to byes, and Neudorf won her first match via pinfall before getting a bye due to injury in the second round.

In the third round of the bracket, Remy won her first match after her opponent was injured in the first round, and Neudorf won a decision with a 2-2 score. In the event of a tie, the winner is awarded to the wrestler with the most recent biggest scoring move, and Neudorf had the most recent two point takedown for the win.

That set up a gold medal final between the two wrestlers from Prince Albert, and Remy took a 6-0 lead before earning the pinfall, giving Remy the gold and Neudorf the silver.

Female 90kg: Kinslee Cousins (Bronze, Carlton)

With only three other wrestlers in the bracket, Cousins wrestled everyone for her bronze medal. She won her first match via pinfall in 29 seconds, but lost her second match to a 5-0 decision to the eventual gold medalist.

The round robin lined up so that Cousins final match was for silver, and Cousins had two two point takedowns in the first period to earn a 4-2 lead going into the second. Cousins then went up 6-2 halfway through the second period, but her opponent managed two two point takedowns late to tie it. The match stayed tied until the end, meaning Cousins would lose a 6-6 decision and take bronze due to the other wrestler scoring their takedown at the end of the match.

Female 105kg: Sarah Murphy (Gold, St. Mary’s)

There was just one other wrestler in the Female 105kg for Murphy at the tournament, so she faced off with Georgia-Lyn Keewatin of Notre Dame. Murphy spent a total of 1:42 on the mat between the two matches, earning pinfalls in each for the gold.

Female 105kg+: Alphie Wolfe (Silver, St. Mary’s)

With one other wrestler in the bracket, Wolfe faced off with Wilkie (McLurg High School) wrestler Andreea Tatarciuc twice. Wolfe was pinned twice during the two matches.

Wolfe would also wrestle in the 106-115kg novice bracket where she’d win gold.

Male 53kg: Ping Bowden (Did Not Place, St. Mary’s)

Male 62kg: Emmet Creuer (Fifth, St. Mary’s)

He improved on that time in round four winning by pin in just 51 seconds, but his toughest match of the tournament came in the semi-finals where he went the full six minutes with a 9-4 win at the end of time.

In the gold medal final, Cyr finished things early in the second period with a 13-2 win to take the gold.

Male 69kg: Nathan Kowal (Gold, St. Mary’s)

In the 11 person weight class, Kowal started the tournament with a 10-0 win about halfway through the first round. That took him to the semi final where he managed a pinfall win 2:00 in, and he managed another pin 2:08 into the gold medal match to win.

Male 73kg: Donte Chaboyer (Bronze, St. Mary’s)

Chaboyer was faced with the eventual gold medalist in the first round, and he was pinned 1:14 in. From there, Chaboyer wouldn’t lose another match as he battled his way up the bronze medal bracket.

In his next four matches, Chaboyer spent less than three minutes on the mat as he pinned all of his opponents in 1:05 or less, earning the bronze medal.

Male 77kg: Tymofiy Kvashulko (Gold, St. Mary’s, tournament MVP), Marcus Corrigal (Did Not Place, St. Mary’s)

Another 17 person weight class, Kvalshulko had byes in the first two rounds as well. He had three straight 4-point takedowns in his first match to win 12-0, and managed another domination win 11-0 in his second match capped off by another 4-point takedown.

The gold medal match against Peacock High School’s (Moose Jaw) Brady Ross was a wild one. Ross scored two points first, Kvalshulko quickly tied it, then both wrestlers traded four point takedowns back and forth with Kvalshulko pulling ahead late. The first period ended with Kvalshulko up 22-14, two points away from the 10 point domination win. He earned his two points 22 seconds into the second period for a 24-14 win and the gold medal.

Because of his clean run through one of the busiest weight classes in the tournament, Kvashulko was named tournament MVP.

Male 82kg: Kaylan Mackie (Did Not Place, St. Mary’s), Seth Vermette (Did Not Place, Carlton)

Male 90kg: Daniel Daigneault (Bronze, St. Mary’s)

With byes through the first round, Daigneault started in the second round of the bracket where he won 10-0 in the second period. A win in his next match would’ve sent him to the gold medal match, but Daigneault lost a defensive battle 4-3 at the end of the six minute match, sending him to the bronze medal bracket.

Daigneault was supposed to wrestle a match to get into the bronze medal match but he got a pass due to an injury forfeit. In the bronze medal final, Daigneault won 12-2 early in the second round.

Male 100kg: Trent Robillard (Bronze, St. Mary’s)

Robillard started his tournament with a 10-0 win in less than two minutes, and he advanced to the gold medal semi final after a 12-7 win in his second round match. Robillard dropped into the bronze medal semi final, and won an 8-2 decision at the end of two periods. In the bronze medal final, he dominated 13-0.

With seven wrestlers in the weight class, the lone bye in the first round was awarded to Penney. Fafard however had to fight in the first round, earning a pinfall win in just 51 seconds.

In the second round, Penney earned a pinfall win 2:19 into the second round, and Fafard was down 6-0 nothing in his second round match but managed to turn a 4-point takedown into a pinfall that earned a win.

That set up a gold medal final between the two wrestlers from St. Mary’s, and Penney earned the pinfall win in 29 seconds to take the final match.

Male 130kg+: Theo Senga (Fourth, St. Mary’s)

Novice brackets

Novice brackets are for wrestlers who are in their first two years of competing in the sport, or are in grade 11 and up regardless of their competition level. All novice brackets are broken up into five wrestler weight classes and are all round robin style brackets, meaning each wrestler is guaranteed four matches unless their weight class has less than five wrestlers.

The winner of each weight class is determined by wrestler’s records, with pinfalls giving wrestlers extra points in the standings.

Novice female 49-51kg: Emily Groves (Gold, St. Mary’s)

In her first match, Groves won in a defensive battle 4-3 after six minutes, then won her second match by pinfall near the end of the second period.

Groves had a 9-0 lead after the first period in her third match before earning two points early in the second for the 11-0 win, and in round four Groves won via forfeit due to an injured wrestler. Groves had already earned her gold medal by the time her bye came in the final round of the round robin.

Novice Female 56-57kg: Deborah Aikoye (Silver, St. Mary’s)

The first match of the tournament end up being the match for gold for Aikoye as she faced the eventual gold medalist, but she lost via pinfall. In the fifth and final round, Aikoye earned a pinfall win in the second period after going up 8-0 to secure the silver medal.

Novice Female 62-64kg: Cecilia Wilson (Bronze, St. Mary’s)

After a bye in the third round, Wilson won her fourth round match against the eventual gold medalist via pinfall late in the second round, but she’d drop her final match via pin in the fifth round.

With a win over the gold medalist and a loss to the silver medalist, it came down to how the wrestlers won their matches. Kylie Weber had three pinfall wins and took gold, Olivia Cappo Muscowpetung had two pinfall wins, as did Wilson, but because Cappo Muscowpetung pinned Wilson in the head to head matchup, Cappo Muscowpetung took silver and Wilson took bronze.

Corrigal’s final match was against Carpenter’s Kaedyn Floberg (Meadow Lake) with the winner earning gold.
