Victim of Prince Albert shooting incident suspects carjacking attempt

The man whose vehicle was shot by an unknown suspect on Friday morning says he thinks the shooter saw his vehicle running and decided to take advantage of the moment.

Logan Markling lives along 28th Street in the Carlton Park area and is a little nervous about going home after a man tried to rob him around 6:30 this morning.

He had used his automatic car starter to warm up his vehicle and as soon as he went outside, things started happening when he saw a white Dodge Ram idling nearby.

The driver of the Dodge got out and yelled at him.

“He started sprinting towards me with the gun and I’m pretty sure he was saying, get out and give me the vehicle. He was banging on the window,” Markling explained, adding he is not completely positive as to what the shooter said because he closed his door.

The man had a mask on and was wearing all black.

“Instinct just kicked it and I drove away. I just put it in drive and that’s when I heard the shot go off and it hit my vehicle. It was just a scary time,” he said.

Markling’s mother and his stepdad own a gun shop, so he recognized that the gun looked like a homemade zip gun and he saw that it was covered in silver tape.

He also went later and tried to find the bullet casing but could not, although the bullet is still inside his vehicle.

“I was kind of panicky and had my hands by my head because he was waving the gun right in my face. I think he was just trying to get my jeep or whatever I had on me at the moment. It didn’t feel like I was targeted,” Markling said.

He’s glad to be physically fine but said the incident has left its mark.

“I’ve been kind of nervous all day, just being out. You never know what anyone’s real intentions are. You’ve got to be safe out there and just watch over your shoulder now,” he said.

He said he saw his East Hill neighourhood as a pretty safe place to be so he didn’t expect to have a gun waved at him although he knows that there is plenty of crime even in his area.

“It’s just a lot of lost souls in the city that have nothing going for them and doing stuff like this is what they do,” Markling said.

His advice to others is to not respond if people yell out and do not know your name and just keep going.

Police said late on Friday afternoon that the man was about six feet tall and heavier set. He was wearing a black hoodie, black ski mask, grey sweatpants and black gloves.

As the investigation is ongoing, Prince Albert Police are asking anyone with information to call them at 306-953-4222 or 9-1-1 if it is an emergency.
