Northern Bears split pair of weekend contests

Jan 26, 2025 | 11:42 PM

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears had back-to-back games this past weekend, playing host to the Saskatoon Stars at home on Saturday before heading west to the Battlefords to face the Sharks on Sunday.

Game one went Saturday night at the Art Hauser Centre where a strong third period by the Bears propelled them past the Stars.

Mikayla Broadfoot grabbed the lead for Saskatoon late in the first period before Zoey Krienke managed to score a buzzer beater for P.A. with 22 seconds remaining in the frame to tie it heading into the second.

There, an early period penalty by Maggie Freeman for cross checking put the Northern Bears on the powerplay. With the man-advantage, P.A. managed to capitalize with Rowan Clement scoring the go-ahead goal.

The lead would last less than 35 seconds though, as Kolbee Ashe pulled the game back to even at 2-2.

Now in the third, the floodgates opened for the Northern Bears as they piled on for three goals in the frame. Jordyn Fidler, Jersie Andersen, and Marly Dumanski each found the back of the net in the period to help lift Prince Albert to the 5-2 victory.

Annika Neufeldt was back between the pipes for the Bears and collected her third win in a row, making 25 stops for her eighth total win of the season.

Game two saw the Black and Orange hit the road for a Sunday matinee, facing off with the Battlefords Sharks at the Battleford Arena.

Following a scoreless first period, the Sharks exploded for three goals in the second. Danika Dureau scored twice while Anneka Aspaas managed the other marker.

The Northern Bears finally managed to break through netminder Cypress Classen late in the third when Marly Dumanski foiled the shutout, scoring shorthanded with less than two minutes to play.

Despite the late comeback efforts, Battlefords stood tall and took the game by a 3-1 score.

Nikita Krayetski got the nod on Sunday, stopping 39 of 42 shots while taking the loss.

With the win and the loss, Prince Albert is now 8-10-1-3 (W-L-OTL-SOL) on the campaign with eight games remaining on the schedule.

The Northern Bears are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they travel back to the Battlefords to face the Sharks again for a two-game weekend set. That game is set for 5:00 p.m. while game two goes on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Either contest will be played at the Battleford Arena.
