Horizon School Division taking collaborative approach on change room policy

The Horizon School Division is working to develop a policy on change room use.

Last week, the provincial government directed all divisions to develop and implement policies.

Horizon’s Director of Education Kevin Garinger told northeastNOW they are in the process of developing an administrative procedure that will align to their practices.

“Whenever there are matters that come before our schools, we engage in a collaborative way to make sure we’re doing the best we can for all children,” Garinger said.

He said looking after all students is part of the mandate of boards and trustees and doing the best they can to do so.

“We need to adjust and find unique ways given the structures of our schools to manage through things like change rooms, but we’ve found the ways in the past and will continue to.”

Garinger said there were no procedures specific to change rooms, but the division will develop them in a way to help support every student. The director was pleased to see how the provincial government worded their directive to school boards, using words like privacy, comfort, and safety.

Horizon has been looking at a variety of admin procedures from across Canada regarding change rooms, according to Garinger.

“We want to take a little bit of time with this and make sure it’s exactly what we need it to be to make sure every child is supported in Horizon School Division.”

North East School Division Director of Education Stacy Lair told northeastNOW they will also be following the provincial directive on change room policies.

The provincial government’s directive is that school boards must make the policy public by June 30.
